Double Loop Learning is conceived from the work of Chris Argyris. Before we can understand what Double Loop Learning, it is important to cover some fundamentals and background in order to grasp the concept. According to Chris Argyiris, every time an individual faces a problem, that individual will have to rely on previous experience in order to address the problem. That is because we rely in prior knowledge of steps to get an expected results. When the result is not was is expected, Double Loop Learning suggest that in order to correct the result, perhaps it is necessary to correct the steps taken in order to reach a the expected result. Fundamentally, if you don't reach the anticipated result following a rules or instruction, it is necessary to revise the instruction or steps in order to truly achieve the anticipated or expected result.
Cognitivism related approach
Double Loop Learning falls under the Cognitivism umbrella. The reason why I firmly believe so is that, while reviewing the different possible umbrellas of "schools", I came across the following quote from the text: "Cognitive learning theory was concerned with the mental processes that operated on the stimulus , and which intervened to determine whether or not a response was made and, if so, which response?" (Harasim P.47) Cognitivism emphasizes the idea of the brain as a processor of information. Double Loop Learning, places great importance in the concept of correction in instructions in order to facilitate or rectify the expected outcome.
