In the age of technology, students need to have a more robust approach at learning. Peaking the interest of students is enhanced when utilizing a medium that they are accustomed to using. The epistemic games instructional model grabs the students interest because it creates a fun learning environment. The model is a embedded with behaviorism and cognitivism. drawing from the experience of others. Students that are not outgoing and shy can utilize an epistemic game to bring out the emotions of students. studies have shown that after utilizing the games the students felt more comfortable talking about their learning experience with other students. The following tree is what i have read were the theories embedded in this model.
the island of expertise makes the student interested in the learning and develop knowledge. this is a knowledge building model(KBM). the games are cognitive, in which they encourage thought and draw out that deep knowledge. by playing the learning games, a student who was not interested in math, could very well start to appreciate math when a science game ( a subject that they may love) has math woven into the games. the students own epistemology will increase. the games help the student both learn new material and also test their own knowledge. All in all the games are built on subjects that students are familiar with, then the game material integrate other subjects to increase knowledge. This learning model has disciplinary knowledge which is strategic and playful.
